One
of the Midwest's best kept secrets (and if we're
smart, we'll keep it that way). Okay, it's not Aspen
or the Alps, but Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg,
IN, has 23--trails, ranging from beginner to the
trickier stuff, on machine-groomed snow surfaces. Peak
elevation is 800; vertical drop is 400. The resort
offers 5 Lifts, 5 Tows/Moving Sidewalks, lessons,
racing leagues, a terrain park, snow tubing and
clinics for adult and child skiers and snowboarders.
There's also, of course, the requisite lodge and ski
shop.

Here
in Cincinnati, we tend to think of Indiana's Perfect
North Slopes for a day of skiing. But if you're
looking for some variety and don't mind some extra
travel time, Ohio has some slopes of its own to offer.
Mad River Mountain
in Zanesfield, Ohio (not to be confused with
Zanesville, on the other side of the state) is about
two hours north of Cincinnati. Mad River is
reasonable for a day trip - unlike other Ohio slopes,
whose locations near Mansfield and Cleveland
necessitate a weekend jaunt.
Mad River Mountain
recently added new trails, expanded its rental
building, enlarged the beginners slope, increased
snowmaking capacity and made a major investment in
snow grooming equipment.
The Base Lodge at Mad River Mountain offers a wide
variety of delicious food and drink served from the
cafeteria, The Lift Line Lounge and The Loft.
Mad River Mountain also offers "Midnight
Madness" all-night ski parties that take place
each Friday and Saturday between 10:30 p.m. and 3 a.m.
