Get
up while it's still dark, have your coffee and be in
Lebanon before the sun rises. Then, as the first light
appears on the horizon, climb aboard and sail away in
a magical balloon. You'll head wherever the wind takes
you, over farmland, creeks, backyards and sometimes
Kings Island. Why sunrise and sunset? Because it's
safest then, fewer up and down drafts and general air
instability. As a rule, you float from two to 1,500
feet in multi-colored balloons that hold four
passengers and delight all the groundlings below, even
the dogs, who see you drift lazily by. Trips go from
three to 10 miles, depending on wind velocity. A chase
truck follows you and gets permission from farmers and
homeowners whose property will be your landing site.
Oh yes, if you're balding, bring a cap. The heat from
the burners can saute a tender scalp. —Barbara
